AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Location: Augusta, Georgia, USA
Designer: Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones
Year Opened: 1933
Famous Events Hosted: The Masters

Noteworthy:
Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most famous and exclusive golf clubs in the world. Founded by Bobby Jones on the site of a former tree nursery, the club opened for play in January 1933. Since 1934 it has been host of the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf.

The course is well known for its botanic beauty as well. Because the Masters is held the first weekend following the first full week in April, the flowers of the trees and shrubs bordering the course are in full bloom during the tournament. Each hole on the course is named after the tree or shrub with which it has become associated:

Augusta National is also famous for several other reasons like:

  • Rae's Creek, the famous creek that runs through much of the course and named after the former owner of the property.
  • Amen Corner, the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes at Augusta were termed "Amen Corner" by a journalist in 1958 who was searching for a name for the location where critical action had taken place that year, he borrowed the name from an old jazz song.
  • The Green Jacket, the winner of The Masters receives the famous green jacket that has grown to symbolize Augusta National Golf Club.

THE OLD COURSE AT ST. ANDREWS

Location: St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Designer: (Old Tom Morris)
Year Opened: here is no real knowledge of when golf was first played at the land that is now St. Andrews, but the earliest evidence suggests 1552.
Famous Events Hosted: The British Open

Noteworthy:
The Old Course at St Andrews is one of the oldest golf courses in the world and possibly the oldest surviving course in Scotland. The Old Course is a public course over common land; the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (which is one of golf's governing organizations) is headquartered at St. Andrews. One of the unique features of the Old Course is the huge double greens. Seven putting greens are shared by two holes each; only the 1st, 9th, 17th and 18th holes have their own putting greens. Another interesting note about The Old Course at St. Andrews is that the course is closed on Sundays to let it rest. Play on Sundays is only permitted only on special occasions, like when St. Andrews hosts the British Open or another major tournament.

Lorena Ochoa won the Women's British Open at The Old Course in 2007.

Bethpage State Park is a mecca for public golf featuring five 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the world-renowned Black Course which was the site of the United States Open in 2002 and will again host the U.S. Open in 2009.

The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers. The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeastern United States. This was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work. The narrow fairways, high roughs, well placed bunkers and small greens help to make this an extremely difficult course.

PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS

Location: Monterey, California, USA Designer: Jack Neville and Douglas Grant Year Opened: 1919

Noteworthy:
Pebble Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Since 1919, the exquisite beauty and unique challenge of Pebble Beach Golf Links has thrilled golfers and spectators alike. Pebble Beach has been the site of golf's most prestigious tournaments, including the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the 1972, '82, '92 and 2000 U.S. Open Championships. Pebble Beach Golf Links was ranked the No. 1 Public Course in America by Golf Digest in 2005.

Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, the course hugs the rugged coastline, providing wide-open vistas, cliffside fairways and sloping greens. It is a delightful challenge for all players. In laying out the course, Neville attempted to bring as many holes to the rocky coastline as possible to allow for beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.
